DIY Air Conditioning Repair Help & Tips

Before ordering an air conditioning part, check for the obvious causes first.

Air Flow. Are any intake vents blocked? Is the filter dirty? If so, does air come out the vents with sufficient force?

Causes: If there is no air coming out, fan motor not running, inspect the fan motor.  If fan motor is running. Motor is not the cause. If the motor is not running, and you hear it humming, try spinning it to get it going. If it takes off, replace motor. We include one with the motor if it has one.

Do-It-Yourself Routine A/C Maintenance

When the temperature rises, it's time to think about routine maintenance for your A/C unit. As with any electrical appliance--remember to disconnect all power to your air conditioning unit before you remove the access panels to perform routine maintenance, and be aware that there may be more than one connection that you must disable.

bulletCheck and change air filters every month. A dirty filter makes your air conditioner work harder and costs you more money on your utility bill.
bulletYour indoor coil should be dusted. Use the soft-brush attachment to your vacuum cleaner to accomplish this task and make sure the coil is dry before you start.
bulletMake sure your outdoor condensing unit is free of any debris--keep grass clippings, leaves, plants, and other items away from your unit. Occasionally you should check the base pan which is located under the unit and remove any debris that has collected.
bulletBe sure the support for your outdoor unit has not settled and caused your unit to become un level. If you see that it is not level, you will need to re-level it to keep moisture properly draining out.

A/C Not Cooling

bulletBe sure your circuit breakers are on and that the fuses have not blown out.
bulletCheck your filters, and make sure they are clean and not obstructed by any debris.
bulletMake sure your thermostat is properly set to cool.

Most dealers recommend that you have your unit inspected and serviced by a professional at least once a year and many offer service contracts which cover seasonal inspections.

Saving Money

It is often quoted that 73.4° is the acceptable temperature for all-round comfort, but it is not necessary to adhere to this figure. It is found that 75.2-77°F in summer and 62.6-66.2°F in winter is comfortable and also saves electricity.

You can save considerably on the amount of energy consumed for each 1°C of cooling or heating that you do without.
